Our Request
We are requesting your support in passing a temporary 1.5-mill levy to supplement our $3 million-dollar federal grant to build a new fire station at 838 Heyl Rd.
This is not a permanent levy: This levy is for five
years and has the potential to be renewed if
needed. The length can be reduced based on
capital campaign donations.
Current Situation
The current fire station, built in 1958, has surpassed its functional lifespan and now faces significant structural, operational, and safety limitations. Inadequate bay configuration, flooding, foundation issues, insufficient living and training space, and aging mechanical, electrical and plumbing systems are a few of the prevalent limitations. Additionally, vehicle reshuffling inside double and triple-deep bays continue to delay emergency response times, particularly during high-risk incidents. This means that crews have to move multiple emergency vehicles out of the way just to et the right truck out the door.
A third-party feasibility study confirmed that relocating the fire station to the property currently owned by the township on Heyl Road will dramatically enhance emergency response efficiency across Wooster Township. This includes Triway Local Schools and the highest-density residential population in our township.
Beyond improved response times, the new station will serve as a long-term community asset. The design concept provides a dedicated training and education room for safety programs, community classes and township events.
The Purpose
A Smart Investment in Public Safety
The Wooster Township Fire Department applied for and received a $3 million-dollar federal grant to build a much-needed new fire station. To utilize this money, we need to commit to building the station and come up with the remaining funds needed to finish the station.
Seizing the moment, we will be improving public safety by the three R’s:
RESPONSE TIMES
This new station will position our resources in the center of our response area, cutting response times for 60% of residents and the new school.
Repairs
Our current station is too small for our mission and facing massive, expensive repairs.
Rising Costs
By pairing our local levy with the $3 million-dollar federal grant, we beat rising construction costs and save money in the long run.
