Our Commitment to Fire Prevention
Fire prevention and public education are top priorities for the Wooster Township Fire Department.
We believe that an educated community is our most valuable asset, and that education starts with our children.
Each year, our firefighters visit local schools, especially during National Fire Prevention Week, to teach:
- Get low and go techniques
- Proper use of the 9-1-1 system
- Exit Drills in the Home (E.D.I.T.H.)
Students also get the chance to:
- Explore a fire engine
- Try on firefighting gear
- Ask our firefighters questions
Inspections & Training Programs
Our department provides several fire safety services to the community:
- Group & Foster Home Inspections – ensuring compliance with State of Ohio fire codes before certification.
- Home Safety Inspections – free inspections for private homeowners to identify potential hazards.
- Business & Organization Training – on-site fire extinguisher training, with hands-on practice for employees. Larger corporations can also request additional training to develop in-house fire brigades.
Since 1985, Thousands of smoke detectors have been distributed through a partnership with the Westwood Ruritan Club. Many were installed free of charge to homeowners in need. Smoke detectors are free to those who live in our response area.
Resources & Safety Tools

Reflective Address Signs
To help emergency crews locate you quickly, Wooster Township Fire & Rescue offers highly visible reflective house number signs. They are available for a $15 donation or free for those in need. Signs can be made at the fire station while you wait, and installation assistance is available upon request.

Dry Hydrants
Dry hydrants provide year-round access to ponds, lakes, and creeks for firefighting. Since 1985, over 30 hydrants have been installed in our district, improving response times and even lowering some insurance rates. Contact us to see if your water source qualifies.

Smoke Alarms
Working smoke alarms greatly increase your chances of surviving a home fire. Wooster Township Firefighters provide smoke alarms free of charge, with installation help available. Please test your alarms regularly and remember: “Change your clock, change your battery!”

Knox Box
A Knox Box gives firefighters secure key access to your building during emergencies. This eliminates forced entry, saves time, prevents costly damage, and allows faster control of fires—reducing smoke, water, and property loss while keeping everyone safer.

Fire Extinguishers
Our department encourages all residents and business owners to keep the correct type of extinguisher available—such as ABC multipurpose units—and ensure they’re inspected regularly. Knowing how to use one safely is just as important as having it nearby.
If you’d like guidance on selecting, inspecting, or using a fire extinguisher, contact us for information or training resources.
